How to get a bursary

January 28th, 2013

Bursaries are essentially money that you get in order to complete your studies and which you do not have to give back. A bursary is offered by independent schools, institutions and sometimes by the state or various organizations.

A bursary is offered based on a special ability that you might have and that sets you apart from the crowd, a proven financial need, and athletic skill or an academic achievement of some kind. This means that you either have to be very good at something (whether it is sports, mathematics, biology, chemistry or something related to educational activities) or be in need of financial aid. Usually is a combination of both, but most of the time the financial aspect is the most important.

In order to get a bursary you must first ask for it. It sounds obvious, but not many people know that they can apply for one thus there are plenty of bursaries out there. The first step is to go to the financial office at your university and ask if there are any bursaries available and if you could apply for one. You will also receive all the requirements and you will need to fill out an application. In the application you must include the proof of how much your parents earn and if that sum is below a certain level set by the university your chances of getting a bursary will sky-rocket. When you apply make sure you ask for skill-based bursaries also and specify if you got exceptional results in an educational field. Usually if you perform really well you will be noticed by your teachers and you will be recommended for a bursary.

Bursaries are also given on the first come first served basis and because there is usually a limited number of this kind of grants you must hurry up a bit and find out when they are released. Even if you missed a chance for a bursary this semester, try to find out when the next bursaries are announced and be among the first to apply for them.

The value of a bursary depends on who is giving it. It can be a full grant that will cover all the taxes or it can be a fixed amount that will be enough to cover a part of the educational costs. Whatever it is, considering that you do not have to give it back, you should take the opportunity and apply right now for the available bursaries.
