7 Useful Ways to Spend Your Free Time now that You Have Scholarship Funding

October 27th, 2015

Scholarships are great. They allow many students to benefit from a university education when they otherwise would not have been able to. They are a double-edged sword, however, especially for those of us who are leaving home for the first time. Many of us, a large number of my friends included, and myself to a certain extent did t make the most of all of this extra free time. You might think that taking advantage of this free time can take the form of having fun by partying, going to bars, going to night clubs. In actuality, these are exactly the forms of time wasting which you should be avoiding. There is so much more that you can be doing with your time which is both more memorable, and will benefit you more in the long run. Please check out the list below for the the best ways to make your time at university as epic as possible.

Joining Clubs and Associations

This is probably what will impact your time at university more than anything aside from the degree which you obtain at the end, this degree guiding your career in a certain direction. Joining clubs and associations are much more than a good way of meeting new people and making new friends. They will allow you to truly find a way of expressing yourself and becoming the best you that you can be. These clubs and associations are very fun. They range from political groups such as those supporting certain political parties or movements, to hobbies such as painting and photography, and other interests such as cosplay and being a fan of certain television shows. Of course, these involve regular outings to bars, trips, and even competitions at times. You will meet people studying different courses, and even other universities. These will truly transform your university experience.

Joining Sports Clubs

There are many different sports clubs at every university or college. In some places, those who take part in sports are the most well respected at the institution. They will represent the facility at local, regional, national, and even international events. The first obvious benefit is to your health. It will build good habits which will stick with for the rest of your life. You will also make lifelong friends. It also gives you an opportunity to travel for competitions. Anybody can join these. Most clubs will let people try out for a few weeks before charging. So if you have zero experience, then try it out first. You have nothing to lose, and a tremendous amount to gain.

Learning a New Language

Of all things in this list, learning a new language is the most consuming one, and the one for which you might never have an opportunity again in your life. You will have a lot of free time at university. This time and flexibility does not exist in the real world. Speaking a new language is something that will totally expand your world. It will teach you a new way of thinking as well as make you more employable, and open the possibilities of when you can be employed in terms of your career, and location. This is not easy by any means. It is truly worth it, however.

Learning To Play a Musical Instrument

Like learning a new language, you may never have time to do this again in your life. Mastering a musical instrument will take years. It is a hobby which can turn into a career, but more importantly it will make you a more interesting person. This is inevitable. You can also join a club or orchestra. Some allow for people at all levels. You will also meet many new and interesting people.

Starting a Business

This is what some of the most successful people in the world have done, but it is by no mean obligatory. Many people set up their own business at university and this becomes their living. Some of them end up dropping out of university to pursue their venture. This is not the aim, obviously. Starting your own business is very valuable, however. It teaches you such useful life skills such as handling responsibility, keeping to your word, staying organized, and people skills. If it is successful, then you will have something to rely on once you finish your studies.

Taking Day Trips

This is another thing that you might not be able to do after university. These can be done alone, or with the friends that you will have made through your study and various activities. Take a day to explore your local area, visit museums, cultural and historical sites, and other things. Not only will these strengthen your bonds with your friends, but also allow you to learn a lot about your local area.

Taking Weekend Breaks

Like the day trips, you will be able to do some unique activities which you will not be able to otherwise. These will be a much more in-depth exposure to either other cities (in the country or abroad), or to enjoy natural wonders such as mountains, forests, and the beach. You do not have to do these on the weekend, but the point is to take several days to dedicate a trip somewhere and be immersed in a totally new environment.

BONUS: Doing Extra Study

Remember, you are at university to learn. These institutions were built for education, first, and everything else afterwards. You will also regret not studying enough to get good grades while you were out partying. Spend extra time in the library. Spend extra time with your teachers and lecturers. Take extra courses. These courses do not need to be related to your studies. Make sure that you are always learning.
