5 Exercises to Guarantee Scholarship Success

September 25th, 2015

Growing up, I was always told that in order to become a master at something, anything, be it a language, instrument, skill, or academic subject, you need to in 10,000 hours of practice. This is as true for scholarship applications as anything else. You might think that you do not need to practice all that much, but in fact, you do. You need to do this a lot. The competition is fierce, and you want to get as much funding as possible so that you can eventually focus on your studies when you do start them, as opposed to constantly worry about budgeting.

Have People Review Your Applications

The application itself is the most important step to your obtainment of scholarships. In order to have any chance of success, you need to send in the perfect application form. It must be flawless. There are several reasons for this. The first is in case you make many errors, which are very easy to do. They range from the small, to the glaring, and almost unforgivable. Small mistakes can include filling in the wrong address, or a simple typo. You might think that such things are minor, and really do not matter. In fact, they do. If such a small mistake is seen, your application will be thrown away almost instantly. A simple spellcheck will not be sufficient. You need to do more. You will need to read, re-read, and read over everything again and again. You will want to do this with fresh eyes, so wait a day between reviews. This way, you will be much more aware of any mistakes or inconsistencies.

It is not enough for only you to go over your application. You need to get other people to go over it with you. So see your counselor, get a relative, find your teachers. They will all be able to not only review everything and point out any errors which you might miss, but they will also be able to add to your application in several ways. This will be in such ways as adding anything important that you might have missed out, any inconsistencies, and some accuracies, as well as any stylistic issues that they might identify. This is very valuable.

Write Your Application in a Single Go if Possible

You will want your application to be as consistent as it can possibly be. This can be done in only one way You must write it in one go if possible. If not, do not take a break of more than a day in writing it. Consistency is key to everything, even more so when it comes to scholarship applications. This is because yours will be read in one go, if anything. As a result, it is best to write it in one go. If it is inconsistent, they might also doubt whether it was written by only one person or not.

Do Not Be Afraid of Rejection

This is true for almost anything in life. These application will therefore be a good training exercise for one of the most important skills to know in order to be successful. It will lead you to develop persistence. Persistence is possibly the most valuable character trait, and common among all those to go on to become great leaders, pioneers, and innovators in very field. You cannot let rejections discourage you. If you did not get a certain scholarship, you simply need to realize that it was not for you, and move on. Move on and find new ones. This is a lot easier said than done, of course. In order to encourage you, remember the following example please. When Starbucks (the international coffee chain) was first starting up, the founders were met with around 150 rejections before they received their first investment. Now Starbucks is one of the largest coffee chains in the world. You will have far fewer rejections and, following our advice, perhaps only approvals.

Seek Counsel

You might have already done this. Well you should do it again, and keep doing it. Do it even after you have enough money to finance your studies, because you will be able to do much with the extra money. You can use it to fund future study, put it into a savings account, or start your own business for example. The time until you reach this point is when counsel is most valuable, of course. You will want to arrange appointments with your professors, counselors, parents, and friends and get their advice and their point of view on your situation. They will be able to guide you in the right direction. Their guidance will help you reach heights beyond those otherwise possible. Speak to as many people as possible. Speak to them as often as you can.

Practice Interviews

This will be part of the counseling that you will receive. It will be critical the most important scholarships that you apply to. For them, the form, and an essay will not be sufficient. This is a far cry from this. They will need to know you as a person. This necessitates a face-to-face interview. You will not want to be caught off guard. As a result, practice is vital. You will want to practice as much as possible. This will ensure interview success as you will truly be able to come into your own, and shine during the interviews that you will face.
