35 of the Best Scholarships Around the World for Women From Africa and Developing Countries Part 2

This is the second of our two part series on scholarships for women from Africa and developing countries. We have a lengthy list, which is why we had to divide the list into two. This is a reflection of the epic scope of the work sought to be done by these schemes, which is truly ambitious.

This is intended for a female post doctorate scientist from a developing country who seeks to work towards resolving issues related to female economic and social empowerment in her home country. Those awarded the scholarships also gain office space at the School for Advanced Research in New Mexico.

Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program

The LAWA fellowship program was established by the Georgetown University Law Center in 1993. It is for those female human rights lawyers from Africa who seek to advance the status of women and girls in their own country. The scholarship is very generous, covering tuition fees, but require they they be able to cover other expenses.

INSEAD Alumni Fund (IAF) Women’s Scholarships

The IAF was sset up in 1977. It raises money from alumni to promote INSEAD’s development. A large part of the IAF is dedicated to scholarships in order to encourage diversity within INSEAD. Diversity can be in terms of nationality, background, and gender for example. The Women’s Scholarships aim to encourage more women to take part in the MBA program. Three short essay ranging from 150 words to 350 words are needed in order to participate. The scholarship is of up to EUR 15,000 for the duration of study.

Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship

The Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship has a very simple aim. It seeks to address the issue that only one in six people on board seats in fortune 500 companies are women. This is not an acceptable gender ratio in this day and age. This scholarship has helped over 400 women from over 50 countries around the world. Women applying may be of any age and must come from one of the Zonta districts. These districts cover much of the world, including around a dozen African countries, but women from outside of these areas will also be considered. Women must be either actively involved in business, or pursuing a business-related program.

Foundation Rainbow Bridge MBA Scholarship for Women from Africa and Asia

This scholarship has a certain focus, which demonstrates the fact that our priorities are sometimes misplaced. It is available to women from Asia or Africa who are from countries which are affected by natural disasters, drought, or famine. These are the countries which most need people to be more educated so that these major issues can be tackled more effectively, and perhaps ultimately eliminated. This scholarship helps women obtain an MBA at HEC Paris, one of the world’s leading business schools. To be eligible for consideration, a 1,500 word essay is needed from an existing female student from Africa or Asia.

Professor De Winter Scholarship for Women at University of Twente, Netherlands

This scholarship was set up by the late professor’s wife and his inheritors. He was one of the founders of the University of Twente. The scholarship is open to applicants from all over the world, and is for masters level students. It is also available for a wide range of subjects, primarily in the engineering, physics, and mathematics areas of activity, but also covering certain niches such as embedded systems, and human media interaction.

Zawadi Africa Education Fund Undergraduate Scholarship for Women – in Partnership with Google

This fund is designed to reward academically gifted women from disadvantaged backgrounds in Africa who wish to study in the US. It is modeled on the Kennedy/Mboya Stuent airlifts from the 1960s. In its short history, it has helped nearly 100 students. This scholarship is not to be relied on by itself, however, as it only covers an average of 10% of the total costs of four years of education.

NUS PHD-MBA Scholarship for International Students, Singapore, Asia

This PHD-MBA Scholarship is offered by the National University of Singapore, one of the world’s best universities. Its goal is simple. It seeks to help students become the entrepreneurs and technology leaders of the future. It aid a program which is very unique. This PHD-MBA is both a PHD, and an MBA lumped into one. The PHD can be in any field. The scholarship includes a tuition fee waiver, and a grant of USD 3,200. There are three main elements to this program. They are the PHD which aids research skills, the MBA which develops business acumen, and internships which provide practical experience.

NYU Wagner Public Service Fellowships for African Women

NYU Wagner has announced its commitment to the education and preparation of leaders of public service of the future. Started with the help of Oprah Winfrey, it hopes to help its students develop their skills for careers in nonprofit, public, and private organizations. This particular scholarship calls for African women to get ready for public service in their home country. It is for one of three programs, which are two masters courses of either Public Administration, or Urban Planning, or the Executive MPA. To be eligible, you must have demonstrated a commitment to public service, and prove that attending NYU Wagner would enhance your mission within public service in your region.

The HP Women’s Scholarship Fund at University of the People

The University of the People is a great new school. It is able to democratize education on a scale previously unthought of. They are also doing another thing which is very good. Thanks to the HP Women’s Scholarship Fund, they are able to offer two year scholarships to 100 female students at the university in order to help them get the associate degree of their choosing.

ESMT Africa Scholarship

The EMST, in partnership with its corporate founders, of which there are 25, is offering one scholarship to a candidate of either gender from Africa for the Executive MBA or full time MBA. With a value of up to EUR 25,000. It is very generous. There are other region specific scholarships available. They include the ESMT Americas Scholarship, ESMT Asia Scholarship , and ESMT Middle East and Central Asia Scholarship, all of which contain developing countries. On top of this, there are at least two scholarship programs dedicated to women.

The Talent for Governance Training Scholarships for Developing Countries has identified one serious problem. This problem is the fact that local civil servants work under dificult circumstances. They work in communities which are characterised by some significant issues. They include widespread poverty, few basic services, high unemployment, environmental issues, and other seious problems. This is why The Hague Academy has developed this program. It consists of four distinct facets, which are beyond the scope of this article.

The ANU International University Scholarship is not exclusive to developing countries. Anybody who is not Australian may apply. This should not discourage you, however. If you achieved excelent results in your final years before starting your university studies for the first time. When it comes to scholarships, however, you should apply to as many as possible. This is one which you should try for if you match the criteria.

The York University International Student Program should not be confused with those offered by the University of York in the United Kingdom, another internationally renowned university. It is for York University in Ontario, Canada. At least three scholarships are available to international students. They include the Global Leader of Tomorrow Award, the United World College Scholarship, and the International Entrance Scholarships, all of which are renewable over three years, conditional on maintaining a high academic standard.

Humber International Entrance Scholarships

The Humber International Entrance Scholarships are relatively small scholarships, but are renewable and are dvided between the three academic semesters throughout the year. They issuance is based on four distince factors. They are based on academics, community involvment, reference letters, and a statement of interest. Graduates may not apply. As they are for bachelor’s degrees. Other scholarships are also for other programs. They include programs for graduates who undertake diplomas, degrees, or postgraduate certificates at Humber College.

You might have noticed that this list seems to underrepresent Asia somewhat. This is why I am glad to include the Schwarzman Scholars Program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Tsinghua University is one of the best, if not the best university in China. It has long served as a brindge between China and the rest of the world. This continues with this scholars program. All you need to be able to qualify as well as your C.V. is the filled in assessment form, along with a three-part essay of up to 1,750 words comprising of a personal statement, leadership essay, and a current affairs essay.

Monash International Merit Scholarships

The Monash International Merit Scholarships at Monash University in Australia are very generous, offering up to AUD 50,000 for a five year degree. 31 scholarships are available to international students with priority given to strategically important countries. In order to qualify, you require a certain level of academic achievement, with a 1,000 word statement.

The La Trobe Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students at La Trobe University is yet another example of Australia’s global outlook. This is not too surprising given that the country is still largerly empty. It is open to any international student, be they on an undergraduate or postgraduate course, so long as they are high acheivers.

Batonga Foundation

We will finish this list with the Batonga Foundation. Its mission is to transform Africa one girl at a time. Unlike most of the scholarships and grants seen so far, these are for girls to attend secondary school. As was stated in the first part of this series, one of the problems with poverty is women not getting the education that they need. This applies to high school girls, too. I therefore urge you to take a look at the work of the batonga foundation. Even if you are unable to attend yourself, you might be tempted to donate to this great cause.
